TRAINING AND AWARENESS PREPARES US FOR THE UNKNOWN OF TOMORROW

With threats originating from all parts of the globe, as well as from within one’s own organization, it is imperative for organizations to not only secure their resources, but protect their staff from hostile threats. Keeping their workplace safeguarded is the most difficult security challenge employers face. Managing workplace crises and mitigating the risk of a violent or catastrophic event is never a stand-alone initiative. At the corporate, business, and facility levels, a third party threat and vulnerability assessment of risk, crisis management plans, operational security plans, emergency management plans, active shooter plans, and threat assessment and management programs, should be completed frequently and pro-actively along with regular staff training to reduce corporate liability in a catastrophic event.

Active Shooter/Violent Intruder incidents in the workplace are on the rise. Businesses have an increased responsibility and legal obligation to be proactive in addressing workplace threats.

Employers Must Train Their Employees – It’s The Law

The failure of an employer to address the threat of an Active Shooter/Violent Intruder in the workplace can be an Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) violation under the General Duty Clause Section 5(a)1.

OSHA requires employers to provide their employees a place of employment that is “free from recognizable hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm”.  OSHA mandates that employers with 50 or more employees must provide Active Shooter awareness training to all of their employees.

ESPADA maintains a suite of customizable programs to assist employers to be in compliance with the law.

ESPADA provides specialized  training that corresponds with the national standard of response for Law Enforcement and First Responders.  This program provides individuals and organizations with the knowledge and capability to identify and effectively react to an Active Shooter emergency increasing the chance of survivability. ESPADA’s programs are designed to provide personnel with knowledge that will empower and instill confidence in their ability to react in an emergency situation.

In an active, deadly threat situation you must rapidly determine how to best stay alive, protect yourself and others, while mitigating the deadly plans of the individual. Avoid– Isolate-Defeat is the strategy we advocate to save yourself and others.
